Thematische Schwerpunkte
Am Eröffnungstag startet das VOLXkino am Karmelitermarkt mit einer Auswahl an Kurzfilmen des Vienna Independent Shorts Festivals und der Satire Pecker.
Einen Schwerpunkt des diesjährigen Programms liegt auf dem österreichischen Film. Preisgekrönte Dokumentationen wie Vienna's lost Daughters, aktuelle Spielfilme wie Immer nie am Meer oder Die Fälscher stehen beispielhaft für vielfältiges heimisches Filmschaffen. Weiters finden sich auch selten gesehene Raritäten wie Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald mit Helmut Qualtinger. Auch eine große Bandbreite an Kurzfilmen ist in diesem Jahr vertreten, was vor allem aus der Kooperation mit den Vienna Independent Shorts resultiert. Zudem wird auch großes Weltkino zu sehen sein: Filme aus Hongkong, Kanada, Frankreich, Bosnien, Mazedonien, Serbien und mehr.
Kulturinstitution
An den 41 Veranstaltungstagen von Anfang Juni bis Ende September werden insgesamt 17 Bezirke mit 27 Veranstaltungsorten abgeklappert. Das Konzept des VOLXkinos ist seit seinen Anfängen im Jahr 1990 nahezu unverändert geblieben. Die Kulturinstitution steht dabei in Kooperation mit Kulturvereinen, Institutionen, Jugendbetreuungseinrichtungen und Gebietsbetreuungen. Der Eintritt für alle Vorführungen ist frei, weshalb der Ansturm auch dieses Jahr wieder groß sein wird.
Kino der Orte
Versucht wird ein vielfältiges Filmprogramm mit untypischen Orten zu verbinden. Das VOLXkino hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, vor allem jene Orte, die von der bestehenden kulturellen Infrastruktur nur wenig profitieren, durch kulturelle Aktivitäten attraktiver zu machen. So wird bei Einbruch der Dunkelheit überall dort gespielt, wo Platz ist. An für Kino untypischen Orten wie in Parkanlagen, zwischen Gemeindebauten, auf öffentlichen Plätzen und Märkten, am Gürtel oder am Stadtrand.
Das VOLXkino verspricht auch diesen Sommer wieder zu einem kulturellen Fixpunkt zu werden. Dabei geht es nicht nur darum, besondere Filme zu sehen, sondern auch um die Atmosphäre, die dabei entsteht. Wie John Naisbitt weiß „geht [man] nicht bloß ins Kino, um sich Filme anzusehen. Man geht vielmehr ins Kino, um mit zweihundert Menschen zu lachen und zu weinen.“
